CATASTROPHIC QUAKE HITS HAITI
Christian Ministries Sending Teams and Relief

Samaritan’s Purse is sending a disaster assistance team to Haiti after the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere was rocked by one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in decades. Samaritan’s Purse dispatched a team just hours after the quake to help with water, shelter, medical care, and other emergency needs. We will focus on medical help, shelter, clean water, and hygiene supplies.

The massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake was the strongest to hit the country in 200 years and was felt as far away as Cuba. The tremor sparked widespread panic as it brought down buildings including the presidential palace, hotels, a hospital, and the UN headquarters in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. “It's really a catastrophe of major proportions,” Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told CNN. Thousands of people gathered in public squares late into the night, singing hymns and weeping. Many gravely injured people sat in the streets, pleading for doctors... How can I help Haiti via Samaritan's Purse?

The North American Mission Board (NAMB) Disaster Relief ministries are responding to needs in Haiti. The North American Mission Board, along with state Baptist convention leaders, has taken the lead in organizing Southern Baptists to respond to disasters. They contribute manpower, ministry, and financial help during floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, earthquakes, and urban disasters. NAMB uses Disaster Relief donations for meeting human needs as a priority and of sharing the Gospel and/or starting churches as part of NAMB's overall disaster relief ministry once these priorities are met. Donations to this fund may be used for multiple disaster responses as needs arise. 100% of funds go to provide relief for victims as all overhead is underwritten by the existing funding via the Cooperative Program gifts.
